"Developing personalised medicine diagnostic tools for degenerative diseases."
Northern Ireland Centre for Stratified Medicine is a centre based in the Clinical Translational Research and Innovation Centre (C-TRIC ) on the Altnagelvin Hospital site in Derry/Londonderry.
The Northern Ireland Centre for Stratified Medicine aims to identify how our genes or patterns in levels and state of molecules within our bodies, or subtle differences in medical images, could be used to create robust clinical decision making tests for a range of degenerative diseases.
The Centre was established in Autumn 2013 following an award of £11.5M (from European Union Regional Development Fund (ERDF) EU Sustainable Competitiveness Programme for N. Ireland, InvestNI, the Northern Ireland Public Health Agency (HSC R&D), ILEX & Ulster University to Professor Tony Bjourson (Director).
Close collaboration with General Practitioners and NHS Health Trusts as well as Intelligent Systems Research Centre within Faculty of Computing & Engineering.
Research focused on developing stratified medicine (precision or personalised medicine) diagnostic tools for degenerative diseases.
50 stratified medicine-focused researchers composed of clinicians, molecular biologists and bioinformaticians, and 15 PhD students
Research Focus: Hypertension and associated co-morbidities (such as cardiovascular disease and stroke), Diabetes, Musculoskeletal Health – Motor Neurone Disease (ALS), Inflammatory disease (including rheumatoid arthritis), Mental health (including Alzheimer's disease and dementia), Cancer (specifically multiple myeloma, prostate cancer), Eye disease (collaboration with Vision Science Research Group)
The center's resources and overall information are being shared with the global project "The COVID-19 Host Genetics Initiative".
https://www.covid19hg.org/partners/
Affiliation: University of Ulster and NHS
Location: Derry, Londonderry, Belfast- N. Ireland wide, Northern Ireland
Research question: Correlation of genotype with susceptibility and severity to COVID19
Study design: Recruit through our N Ireland COVID19 consortium
Study Type: Retrospective(n=2800), Prospective(n=3000)
Genetic analysis: WES, WGS, GWAS
Assays planned: Immune profiling
Other assays: Multiple morbidity and medication
Investigators: Professor Tony Bjourson
