Rebuilding Together Montgomery County NGOs

Rebuilding Together started in 1973 in Midland, TX, with an act of grassroots activism and community engagement. A small group of people realized a growing need in their community and resolved to help. Some of their neighbors' homes had fallen into disrepair, and the homeowners could not afford to fix them on their own. In response, these community members volunteered their time and skills to rehabilitate the homes of their neighbors, beginning what was known as Christmas in April. This simple act of neighbors helping neighbors inspired others to get involved and eventually spread across the country, bringing together partners from all walks of life to help our neighbors year-round. In 1988, the organization opened its national office in Washington, D.C. and renamed itself Rebuilding Together, encompassing 166 affiliates within its network.

Rebuilding Together Montgomery County ("RTMC") opened its doors in 1990 as a member of the Rebuilding Together network. Over the past 26 years, RTMC has provided free critical home repairs, energy efficiency upgrades, and accessibility modifications to Montgomery County's most vulnerable low-income homeowners - veterans, families with young children, senior citizens, and individuals with disabilities. Our mission is to bring volunteers and communities together to improve the homes and lives of low-income homeowners in Montgomery County.

Our goal is to provide our client families with the repairs and upgrades they need to enable them to remain in their homes in a safe and healthy environment for years to come. We provide both small and large scale repairs ranging from minor plumbing repairs and the installation of hand rails and grab bars to addressing major plumbing and electrical problems, leaky roofs, as well as HVAC repairs. The impact of this work goes well beyond the individual homeowner; it helps prevent homelessness, preserve affordable housing, and revitalize entire communities.
