Portland College (UK) NGOs

Just to give you some background, Portland College was founded in 1949 by Winifred, Duchess of Portland, it is one of the leading national residential specialist colleges in the country. Portland is committed to providing first class facilities for developing the intellectual, professional, and practical skills of its physically disabled students. It offers both Further Education and Vocational Training. Almost 300 students, aged 16 to 60, come from across the United Kingdom representing a broad range of ethnic and social diversity and requiring intensive care and therapy support in addition to their learning needs. This inclusive but diverse environment makes for a very special and supportive sense of community at Portland. Young, more profoundly disabled students learn life skills and independence, gain confidence and maximise their potential through individually tailored learning programmes and goals. Adults who through accident or illness need to retrain in alternative careers follow relevant work-orientated training programmes designed specifically to prepare them for employment. Over half of our students are profoundly disabled young people aged 16-19 years.
