Habitat for Humanity of Northern Virginia, Inc. NGOs

Habitat for Humanity of Northern Virginia (Habitat NOVA) is building better communities through affordable homeownership.

Founded in 1990 by housing advocates concerned about the lack of affordable housing in Northern Virginia, Habitat NOVA has facilitated the dream of homeownership for more than 90 lower-income families. We are a self-funded, independently operated affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. Our mission is to provide simple, decent and affordable housing to those in need. We are headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia, and build homes in Arlington and Fairfax counties as well as the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax and Falls Church.

The Habitat model of affordable housing is unique, in that we provide a "hand up" to homeownership. In addition to constructing an affordable home, Habitat provides interest-free mortgages, very low down payments, homeownership and financial counseling, and buy-back options for our homeowners. We select Habitat families based on their need for decent housing, ability to meet monthly housing costs for a home, and willingness to partner with us to help build their homes.

"Building Better Communities Through Affordable Homeownership" is more than our motto; we are committed to increasing the number of affordable homes for sale to lower-income families across Northern Virginia. By harnessing the power of volunteer labor, and the support of individual donors and sponsors, we are able to keep construction costs below market rates, allowing us to sell our homes at truly affordable prices. We also build our homes to EarthCraft standards to help reduce the future homeowners' water and energy bills.

Every year, Habitat NOVA mobilizes volunteers who give their time and talent. Volunteers come from all corners of our community, from individuals who share our vision to members of faith community groups and corporate-sponsored employee teams. Generous local businesses and organizations also donate building materials and professional services that support our home builds.

Additionally, Habitat NOVA operates ReStores in Alexandria (869 S. Pickett St.), Chantilly (4311 Walney Rd.) and Herndon (311 Spring St.). ReStores accept gently used and/or new appliances, building supplies, furniture, décor and more, which they sell to the public at up to 50%-90% below original retail value. ReStores are operated by a small staff and rely on the support of volunteers to arrange merchandise, unload donations and assist customers. The net profits from the ReStores support Habitat NOVA's mission to provide affordable homeownership opportunities.
